Ok, some fusspot has picked me up on this already. The bitterns were
Botaurus poiciloptilus, or Australian Bittern. Aka Brown Bittern (
Pizzey p118)

At least four Brown Bitterns were sighted ( ca eight sightings all
together) along the bird hide track at Lake Frome near Rendelsham in the
SE of South OZ. on Friday 2nd June. The birds were easily flushed many
times as we walked the track.

Very little was seen from the actual hide.
