Have just returned from 9 days in SW Qld and was struck by the absence of
cormorants during the trip. From home at Maleny we travelled west through
Brisbane Valley to Yarraman, Cooyar, Dalby, St George, Cunumulla,Eulo and
Yowah, and returned the same route.Despite stoping at most dams, large and
small, visible from the roadside, and spending time at Lake Broadwater, Warrego
Rv and Beardmore Dam (St George), 5 days at Bowra Cunumulla (separate report to
follow) we saw the grand total of ONE Little Pied Cormorant over the 9 days and
1950 kms, no other corms at all.
What are the possible reasons for this? In drought times I would have thought
they would be congregated on these bodies of remnant water.Or have they left
long ago? Is it the time of the year?
Would appreciate any thoughts or comments on this absence.
