Hi all

There has also been a decline of House Sparrows in Queensland (mainly Brisbane) gardens as indicated by the QOS/BirdsQueensland Garden Bird Surveys conducted in 1979/80 and again in 1999/2000 (Sunbird 32: 37-51).

The number of gardens they were reported from declined from 69 to 37%, the total number records (=weeks) of House Sparrows declined from 53 to 18% and the mean maximum numbers estimated to be in gardens declined from 6.6 to 1.0.

A decline has also been reported for the Canberra populations of House Sparrow but I'll leave Philip Veerman to say more about that.

I showed a negative correlation between Noisy Miner numbers and those of House Sparrow (and most other small birds) but there are probably many other factors operating as well.

Cheers

Peter
