I am soon to go to Indonesia and the Philippines on business and
would
like some advice on field guides.
My online research indicates that there is only one Indonesian
field
guide that covers most of the archipelago, which is `A Field
Guide to
the Birds of Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Bali', by John Mackinnon, et
el, OUP, 1993. This guide seems to be very difficult to procure
and I
have not found a single copy on the web, either new or second-hand.
There is also a photographic guide sold by Andrew Isles amongst
others, `[1]A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Indonesia' (ISBN:
[2]0691114951) by Morten Strange.
Two questions then. Is it worth continuing to try and procure the
Mackinnon field guide or is it worth purchasing the Strange
photographic guide or should I take both? I have never contemplated
birding with a photographic guide before so I would appreciate any
comments.
For the Philippines it would seem that all roads lead to [3]A
Guide to
the Birds of the Philippines by Kennedy, R.S.; Gonzales, P.C.;
Dickinson, E.C. et al. Any comments?
Regards
Alastair
