Was having a look round the far western end of the beach at Kurnell when
I came across a small group of waders late today. Didn't come across
them till a few minutes after sunset and the view was into the light,
even so it was quite close through 10x42 binos. Wader ID is not
something I have had a lot of practice at, so comparing notes taken on
site to the field guide later led to confusion. I noted the following
features, Black bill (all black)medium size, straight, stout, overall
size was about 1/2 the size of nearby Silver Gulls, yellowish legs, dark
eyeline with whitish brow, Tail and wings pretty close to same length
and appeared darkish along rear half of edges. I also noted a partial
whitish collar, most noticable when bird turned it's head to preen. Some
birds also showed what appeared to be vertical grey barring along the
flanks. Others were plain lightish grey.
They were roosting on one of the groynes at high tide, close to shore in
a group of about 10. Overall colours were muted greys, though light not
ideal for saying with certainty. I'm thinking Wandering or Grey Tailed
Tattler. Any suggestions on ID?
regards,
Chris Ross
