Following on the fuss on the South Gippsland Bald Hills Wind farm - planned for a major flight-path used by waterbirds, raptors and other birds - it has now been cancelled by Ian Campbell, the Fed. Minister for the Environment. He has done this on the grounds that it might kill the odd Orange bellied Parrot. (I can't believe that OBPs are regular denizens of the area, but doubtless the thousands of swans, ducks, waders and raptors which commute between wetlands through the proposed windfarm site will appreciate the decision.). Pity about the OBPs in Western Victoria which got a windfarm where they still actually occur!

Sean Dooley writes in _The Age_ of Friday 7 April 2006 /"This isn't about a parrot, it's opportunistic political bastardry./" Well said, Sean, and I wish I could have put it so well. If I knew how to include a hyperlink I would, but perhaps some other kind reader will do so. Meanwhile, fellow birders, read it.
