I have been slowly compiling a list of all the taxa (species and subspecies) that I haven't yet seen in Australia, mainly so that when I go on a holiday somewhere I know what to keep a look out for. I have been searching through the archives (and various other websites and HANZAB) to compile lists of potential locations to look out for things.

Over the next few months I will send the occasional e-mail looking for information on various taxa for various areas that I have been unable to find more than a few locations for.

I will start off with two (what I think) easy ones.

Has anyone birded the Tiwi Islands (Bathurst and Melville)? There appear to be 10 endemic subspecies, plus a race of the Helmeted Friarbird, that are found there. A few are also quite rare (Masked Owl, Hooded Robin) so they may be difficult to find. I have heard of cultural tours there, but has anyone visited and done any bird watching there? What is access like, and did you have much success (ie how many species were seen)?

Similarly, has anyone birded Groote Eylandt? It is listed as a potential for a number of species (including mangrove specialists). I know someone who lived there for a while, but he isn't a birder. Has anyone visited for any reason and how did they go getting about.

If anyone would like any of this info forwarded on (if it comes privately rather than to the list) I am happy to provide copies (or at least a summary).
Cheers,
Peter
