Very good point Alan, It can be hard to identify the various sub-species hanging around wetlands. At first look they could have been of the "watching" variety, but they are very rare in these parts, and tend to avoid such places in late March when other more aggressive species arrive. The size of the beer-guts lent me towards the "shooting" sub-species which are less active and gorge themselves on fresh meat before their long migration back to their more usual urban habitats. I'm glad to say I did finally clinch the i'd when one individual turned to display its fineries .. a body adorned with ammunition. Simon starr, Birdwatcher whose given up the camouflage, but is still working on the beer-gut ! |
