Hi Birders,
Stephen Brooking reported on the breeding of some Plumed Whistling Ducks at
Geneebinga Wetlands at Casino and asked the question "What is the status of
the these ducks (= Wandering & Plumed Whistling Ducks) as far as breeding
goes in NSW"
Both species are breeding residents. Wandering Whsitling Ducks occur in
small flocks (2-70 birds) south from the Queensalnd border to about Sydney,
with the main concentration being in the Hunter, Hastings and Clarence
Valleys, breeding is often reported and number of breeding events have been
mentioned on birding-aus from people giving trip reports on visits to the
Hunter Wetlands.
Plumed Whistling Ducks are more widespread, with small to large flocks
(20-300 birds) resident in the Richmond, Clarence, Macleay, Hastings, Hunter
and Hawkesbury Valleys on the coast, and in the Riverina, Macquarie Valley,
and Gwydir River areas in western NSW,. Breeding is often reported but more
often where there are resident birdwatchers.
The NSW Annual Bird Reports, published by Birding NSW, give more information
about their status. See the Birding NSW website www.birdingnsw.org.au for
more info.
