From my knowledge and information, if the most
recent record of Eastern Reef Egret in the Victorian Dept of Sustainability
& Environment's Atlas is 4 Dec 2001 as stated by Martin, their Atlas
is way out of date. This species is regular at Mallacoota and occasional at
Wingan Inlet (per Len Axen) in the far east of the state and there is some
evidence that the species may be moving west. Note recent sightings of up to 4
this February (2006) at Cape Conron and at the mouth of the Snowy
River at Marlo. See Birds Australia (VIC) website www.babblersnest.com - Birdline
Victoria - Recent Sightings. Note that as Greg Clancy points out, it is
significant that only grey phase birds are reported whereas the suspect Werribee
bird was white.
I also wonder whether such strange birds could be
Great/Little Egret hybrids especially as these are the only local breeding
species!
