Some unusual birds have been seen around off the Sunshine Coast with cyclone Wati out to sea.

Unfortunately, with seas as they have been, there may have been no boats going out, and I may not receive a definitive answer.

There was at least one large, very dark bulky bird which we decided had to be a Great Skua.    There may have been more than one of these, but if so, they were always on their own.  We could not get clear markings.

The other birds were seen two at a time, were more graceful in flight, and were dark above and whitish below.   There were possibly a few pairs, but because we could only see two birds at a time, I am not sure, but we thought these were Jaegers, but which one?   Again, we had no hope of checking tail shapes, etc.

At other times, Shearwaters were seen, but I found none when we were there.

Did anyone who knows their seabirds get a really good look at these birds and identify them properly?

Would appreciate hearing any further information on these vagrants.

Thanks

Robyn
