Hi All,
I've just returned from a family trip to the western Grampians, birding
mainly in the dry open woodlands of Wartook State Forest. Birding was
excellent, perhaps because many birds have been pushed out of the burnt
areas of the central Grampians and into the fringes.
Highlights included good numbers of Speckled Warbler, a Black-eared
Cuckoo, White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, Hooded Robin and Diamond Firetail.
Other birds included Emu, Restless Flycatcher, White-browed Babbler,
Varied Sittella (black-caped ssp), and lots of small birds such as
Yellow and Yellow-rumped Thornbill, Weebill, Spotted and Striated
Pardalote. Another surprise was a very large majestic female Red Deer
(again probably pushed out of the main part of the Grampians NP).
Best spot for birding at Wartook is along O'Sullivan Rd (a track
really). From the Mount Victory Rd turn into O'Sullivan Rd. Travel west
for a approx. kilometre until you reach a track that leads left. Park
here and bird along the ridge that leads south, particularly between
the track and a small dam at the top of the ridge. Speckled Warbler,
Black-eared Cuckoo, Hooded Robin and Diamond Firetail were all seen is
this area.
Another good birding spot was Cherrypool on the Glenelg River (30 km
west of Wartook). Birds included Intermediate Egret, Great Egret,
Darter, Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbill, Nankeen Night Heron, Black-
fronted Dotterel, and a pleasant surprise, Variegated Fairy-wren.
Cheers,
Tim
