Hi all

I've noticed since living near Lake MacQuarie that Noisy Miners get alarmed
whenever an egret or white-faced heron fly past (not really predator species
for the NM)- and I have a theory! It is the shape of the egrets for example.
They are in the same general shape (flying with their neck folded back) as a
raptor with a short head and long tail which is a combination of legs and
tail.

I remember reading of an experiment conducted many years ago where a cut-out
of a flying bird silhouette was trailed across the sky on a long lead from
a plane. The cut-out resembled either a duck or a hawk depending which end
was used as the front end. If the 'hawk' was trailed the birds below got all
alarmed whereas if the 'duck' was trailed it was ignored.

Ideas?

Cheers

Colin Driscoll
