A second hand report of an interesting bird sighting at Walka Water
Works near Maitland in the NSW Hunter Valley:
Last Friday, March 3, 2006, at around 10.30 John Smith a volunteer
worker at Walka Water Works noticed an unusual bird entangled in spider
web in an Oleander bush near the main Pump House building. He took the
bird to his boss, Frank Hackney, the resident caretaker of Walka Water
Works. Frank has previously worked in Northern Australia and was able to
identify the bird as a female SUNBIRD. He was also aware in the
significance of this sighting. Whilst the bird was in the hand they
checked it against a Bird Identification book. The bird was distressed
from being entangled so they unentangled it and released it promptly.
Shortly after Jim Thomson, a well known nature photographer, arrived and
confirmed Frank and John's description as a sunbird. There have been no
reports of the bird having been seen again.
