On Sunday last, 26 Feb 2006, with the help of the Mornington Peninsula Field
Naturalists, I conducted the monthly survey of birds at Melbourne Waters ETP
near Carrum on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay, poor cousin of the WTP
at Werribee. We logged 73 species of which 51 were wetland dependant or
raptors. There were 13 shorebirds including 3 Wood Sandpipers, 1 Common
Sandpiper, 1 Pectoral Sandpiper, 750 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, 210 Red-necked
Avocets & a Double-banded Plover. Coot numbers had risen to 3,000 and there
were over 2,150 waterfowl of 12 species including 11 Cape Barren Geese. Also
of note were a Nankeen Night Heron, 6 Royal & 18 Yellow-billed Spoonbills &
a Peregrine Falcon.
