Hi everyone
I'm posting to inform you of a threat to the environment of
the Noosa hinterland in SEQ. The Qld and Federal governments have
proposals before them to re-route the Bruce Highway (the national highway) east
through the Noosa hinterland. Alternative proposals exist for upgrading
the highway in its current (degraded) corridor. Moving the highway east
will result in the clearing of up to about 200 acres of forest including
regionally endangered gallery rainforest on alluvial soil. Burrawingi
Nature Reserve, owned by prize-winning Noosa environmentalist, Phil Moran, will
be bitumenised! Bear in mind that this area is known as a foothold for the
Coxen's fig-parrot and Noosa Council has for years tried to maintain forest
cover in the area, supported by wildlife corridors. Projects have also
been completed to improve habitat for Red goshawk, known to nest in the
area. The local community lobby group, No Unfair Southern Eastern Routes
Inc. (of which I am Sec.) has received alot of support from conservation groups
especially the Sunshine Coast Environment Council and Noosa Parks
Association. If you want to learn more, go to our website www.nuser.net and download our
Report.
For those who wish to help, a letter or email to the Federal
and Qld Transport and Environment ministers asking them to ensure that the Bruce
Highway is upgraded in its existing corridor in the Southern Zone, would help
indeed.
