As typical for this time of year, there are large numbers of birds and several unusual species occurring at the Wetlands at Edithvale (Melways 93 D8) as they dry out. Andrew Silcocks and I recorded 66 species while conducting the Birds Australia monthly survey there yesterday, 21 February. Some notable observations were 1 Magpie Goose, two broods of Blue-billed Ducks, 3 Great Egrets, 1 Intermediate Egret, 2 Nankeen Night Herons, 4 Royal & 6 Yellow-billed Spoonbills, 2 Spotless Crakes, 27 Marsh Sandpipers,
5 Wood Sandpipers, 26 Latham's Snipe, 260 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers (numbers peaked at 900 earlier in the month), 100 Black-winged Stilts, 4 Red-kneed Dotterels & 4 Long-billed Corellas. On the 16th, a Little Egret & 2 Caspian Terns were seen. A Pectoral Sandpiper which had been present for many weeks was found today with 65 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers about 1.5 km away on the wetlands in the Waterways Estate west of Springvale Road (Melways 93 D3).
