Wagtail Way on Ash Island in fact was
named in honour of its regular visitors. The birds, when present, are
very often seen feeding on this particular track. Up until about 9 or 10
years ago the track was fairly basic, and unnamed, but then the local
electricity company upgraded it to improve their access to the power lines.
Not long after, in 1998, we started to see Yellow Wagtails there and they’ve
turned up most years subsequently. Perhaps they always were around but our
only prior record was a brief sighting near Stockton in 1993.

Can Wagtails read? Were
they there intentionally?
