Hi birders,

Just to let you know about a special Melbourne public seminar on avian
influenza to be held by Birds Australia on Thursday February 9th 2006 at

"Avian Influenza: the virus, the birds and the humans"

We will have a panel discussion by some of Australia's leading
ornithological and public health expert speakers on the subject of Avian
Influenza. The panel of speakers and their topic for discussion

Dr Lorena Brown, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and
Immunology, University of Melbourne. "Avian influenza virus. What is it,
and how it does what it does."

Dr Pat Macwhirter. Registered specialist in Bird Medicine and practising
avian veterinarian. "Avian influenza in birds. What birdwatchers and
owners of pet birds should know"

Dr Ian Barr, Deputy Director WHO Collaborative Centre for Reference and
Research in Influenza. "Avian influenza in humans ? precautions against

Dr Doris Graham, a leading microbiologist and wader expert, will chair
the discussion.

The talk will be held at our usual venue: down stairs at the theatrette
at Strathcona BG Grammar School, Scott St, Canterbury, Melbourne
(Melways Ref 46 D12).
