I have been 'off' birding-aus for a week or two during a longer stay in Sydney,
but, after returning, can report the following.
At Little Llangothlin Lagoon (N. of Guyra, NSW) on 20 Jan there were excellent
numbers of Musk Duck (at least 10 pairs), many Blue-billed Ducks (at least 30
males with females not much in evidence -- sitting??) and several pairs of
Great Crested Grebes. Only one Pink-eared Duck found, and not a lot else to be
seen on a wet and windy day.
Dangars Lagoon (nr Uralla NSW) on 23 Jan also had several male Blue-bills, a few
Great
Crested Grebes, in excess of 100 Pink-ears, and -- a species I have never seen
here before -- an immature Spotted Harrier. The bird passed 20 metres in front
of the hide, giving the observers a fine view of its facial discs, strongly
barred tail, and grey back with black wing-tips. A magnificent sight! Sadly
there were no Whiskered Terns to be seen.
Gwydir Park (30 kms west of Uralla) on 24 Jan had at least two Striped
Honey-eaters and at least two pairs of Speckled Warblers. There are plenty of
Bee-eaters all along that stretch of the Gwydir River.
