recording equipment for bird calls

  Can anyone advise me on the most suitable equipment for recording bird calls 
please? I am wondering about using digital iPod /MP3 type equipment with a 
shotgun microphone. What do you do about stereo? I asume you could edit the 
recording into separate files for each call.
