Hi Birders,
I have checked the records for NSW and found that Orange Chats are normally
confirmed to western NSW, with the eastern limits given in 1981
approximately from Moree Watercourse in the north, south through the
Macquarie Marshes, Condobolin, Griffith, Deniliquin and Mathoura.
Occasionally they have been recorded east to Gilgandra, Parkes, Bumbaldry
and Rand. In recent times there have been regular records for Fivebough
Swamp at Leeton & at Lake Cargelligo, and in 1981 there was an irruption as
far east as Wellington and Molong. The species is usually confined to the
Bladder Saltbush Plains of the far west of the State.
Therefore an observation of a female Orange Chat at Maroubra is an
exceptional record. But these things happen, and a number of years ago
during a Field Ornithologists Club outing to Boat Harbour Kurnell, another
denizen of Inland saltbush plains, the Inland Dotteral was observed on the
rocks, feeding along with Turnstones and Red-necked Stints!
Good spotting by Frank Hemmings! So yes first record for Sydney Region
(County of Cumberland).
Which brings me to the Glossy Black Cockatoos at Pearl Beach (NSW Central
Coast). Great though the experience and observation was for the person who
found the birds, Glossy Black Cockatoos are a moderately common resident in
the Pearl Beach area.
