I do feel guilty now, what a stirrer! Never sure with Birding-aus which
emails have come through the forum and which privately so won't mention any
names. I'm only teasing, honest. I have absolutely no doubt that Mike
Carter, or any others on rarity committees anywhere, aren't 100% bonzer
birders (see I did learn something down under), just get mildly irked by the
odd thing or two. I hope you'll forgive me Mike, and hope you'll pop in if
ever you're in the south of England. Quite apart from anything else I
wouldn't want anyone thinking I need to travel half way round the world to
misidentify things. I'm perfectly adept at it here, too ;-)
Although . . . as it has been resurrected I will mention my dodgy
shearwaters again. I don't doubt local knowledge regarding the relative
abundance of Short-tailed and Sooty, but I'm rather concerned that I haven't
yet found anything on the web, despite some thorough searching, to tell that
they definitely weren't Sooty. Is there a good ID paper I can look up? And I
still stand totally by the pale-phase Wedge-tailed ID. Anything that's
similar and more likely, please let me know, then I can reassess.
