Hello all,
I've put up another New Zealand update to my website
(www.wildlifing.com). This part covers the Otago Highlands and then Lake
Paringa (on the west coast) and the Okarito Lagoon.
Otago Highlands- includes Black Stilt, Wrybill, Banded Dotterel,
Black-fronted Tern, Rifleman and Tomtit. At Lake Paringa I photographed
Kea feeding on New Zealand Flax- there's a lowland coastal population of
Kea here.
The Okarito Lagoon supports the only White Heron (Great Egret) breeding
population in New Zealand. The colony only exists on one small stretch
of the stream- apparently it is the only place they have ever been known
to breed. These White Herons would have to be one of New Zealand's
rarest birds. The only access to them is via guided tour- I went in with
a couple of friends from the town of Whataroa. Short bus trip, fast
speedboat trip down the river and then a slower cruise to a walkway
through rainforest/ wetland which lead to an excellent hide opposite the
colony.
Cheers
Mick
