Interesting - yesterday I had a walk around part of Lonsdale Lakes,
near Pt Lonsdale, VIC.
This is a great wader spot at this time of the year. I didn't see
any unusual birds, although I tried very very hard to turn an
unusually plumaged Sharpie into a Pectoral Sandpiper. The only
remarkable thing was the number of waders with orange flags - I
assume these were banded last year? Or has the VWSG been banding in
this area earlier this summer? In about half an hour, along a 500m
path, I counted the following birds with orange leg flags:
2 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers
2 Curlew Sandpipers
14 Red-necked Stint

Bird ringing reaches record level
A record number of birds were ringed in 2004, the British Trust for
Ornithology (BTO) has reported.
BTO volunteers put rings on 881,920 birds in 2004 beating the
previous record of 859,252 set in 1995.
