Part 2….
NORTH BOURKE, NSW (28/12/05)
On private property we saw 26 Inland Dotterels with 2 Banded Lapwings
on a stony paddock
MT GUNDERBOOK A NP, NSW (about 40 km south of Bourke) (29/12/05)
Near the Little Mountain lookout near Dry Tank we saw a male
Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush and 6 plus very approachable White-browed Treecreepers. Also in this National Park were 2 Emus, 6
Chestnut-crowned Babblers, Crested Bellbirds and Spotted Bowerbird.
NSW/QLD BORDER (29/12/05)
At Barringun we saw no less than 500
Budgerigars beside the Mitchell HWY
on the south side of the border.
“BOWRA” IN CUNNAMULLA, SW QLD
(29/12/05)
This has got to be one of the best bird watching places that we have
ever visited with an excellent variety of inland birds to see. We saw during
our short stay there our first ever group of Halls Babblers (6) as well as an
excellent view of a male Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush calling on a low perch,
a pair of Redthroats, a male Red-backed Kingfisher,
Crested Bellbird, wonderful views of a Spotted Nightjar skimming the surface of
a dam “well before dusk” and also on the same dam “after dusk”
no less than 5 -7 Bourkes Parrots coming to drink
(though almost dark we still could see all their colours
and markings quite well through the David’s scope). We also heard a few
White-browed Treecreepers in the Mulga
there.
The well watered grass around the Bowra
homestead attracted an excellent variety of birds including Red-winged Parrots,
Blue Bonnets, 10 Chestnut-crowned Babblers, Brown Tree-creepers, a variety of
Honeyeaters etc.
We both definitely like to visit this place again.
BETWEEN BOURKE AND NYNGAN (30/12/05)
A dam beside the road about 40 km east of Bourke had good range of
birds including Pacific Heron, a Brown Goshawk, 3 Mulga
Parrots, 20 Diamond Doves, Crimson Chat, Spotted Bowerbird etc.
BETWEEN NYNGAN AND WARREN (30/12/05)
Most of our Emus were seen along this stretch of road (about 12 birds)
especially closer to Warren.
We visited the Macquarie Marshes which appeared to have dried out.
If have prepared a detailed list of the birds and the areas they were
seen for this trip in Excel format. Please let me know if you would like me to
email you a copy.
