Interesting point Norman which had me flicking through my field guides.

Morcombe p123 states quite clearly "no hind toe" next to his
illustration.

Simpson and Day p92 states "no hind toe" in the descriptive text, but as
usual Ken's waders have their feet either in water where you can't see
them or otherwise out of sight, this time hidden behind a Broad-billed
SP in one picture and in muddy looking stuff in the other.

The one I particularly found odd though was Hayman, Marchant, Prater
whose pictures ( plate 74) show no hind toe , but their usually very
comprehensive descriptions on pp 184 and 365/66 actually don't mention
this very diagnostic feature.

No hind toe is probably a well known feature of Sanderling, but I wasn't
aware of it before this. I'll be watching for it in future.

Sanderlings have only three toes, the hind toe is lacking. Your
excellent
picture shows a distinct hind toe so to me this bird looks more like
Red-necked Stint Calidris ruficollis. Sanderlings have pale silvergrey
upperparts in non-breeding plumage while your bird shows a faint
brownish
tint.
Happy New Year, Norman
