Please note - Murray Magpie is what is South Australians call the bird
which is officially an Australian Magpie-Lark, and called a Mudlark here
in Victoria. The heretics further north call it a Pewee.

Subject: rearing baby magpie

Hi,

This morning at around 10.45am I came across a baby murray magpie.
It doesn’t have tail feathers and is still growing other feathers
and I THINK may be around 9cms long (not sure). Where I found it
live many cats and a few of them were watching it. When I picked it
up, a pair of adult murray’s squacked a bit then flew off. I had tog
hold on to the bird as the cats were around, and don’t have the time
to wait there to see if parents return. I work most of the day but
my mother is home mostly. We haver given it some rearing bird
mixture mixed with water to form a paste and used a syringe to give
this to it. After one forced attempt, the bird was opening its mouth
every time it saw the syringe and was easy to feed it. We are not
sure about 2 things-

how much and how often to feed it?
how much water needs to be given to it?

It would be great if you could let me know how I can help the bird.
We have tried contacting numbers given to us by a vet but only get
answering machines. Vets just say to bring it down there and they’ll
kill it. We love animals and previously reared a turtle dove pigeon
on this food mixture, the bird became a family pet and even played
with the cat and dog.

Thank you,

Mara Kreismanis
