I am going to the southern half of the North Island of New Zealand in February. We will be there for 10 days. I would be grateful for any information about good birding spots for land or sea birds. Our intention is to drive from Wellington to Napier and perhaps back along the west coast.

Last year we were going to do the bird watching cruise from Kaikoura but it was cancelled because of adverse weather conditions. Is there anything similar in this area? We have been to Tiritiri Matangi Island when we were in Auckland and seen native birds there.

I see mention of Mt Bruce and the national wildlife centre there. Is this worth a visit?

Regards
