On a trip through the Lake Eyre Basin, I saw three groups of inland
dotterels, all on the one day, in the vicinity of Lake Eyre. I flushed
one group while driving into Lake Eyre North, came across another
nesting on a "walkway" out into the Lake, and saw a family with
juveniles as I was starting to drive back. Perhaps I was lucky, or
there was some environmental factor that made them stand out ...

G'day Birders,
this talk on Inland Dotterels is timely for me
as I have just returned from a trip to western NSW where I saw my
first Inland Dotterels. I saw a total of three birds (2 near Tilpa,
one near White Cliffs, north western NSW). Discounting one bird which
was a road kill, the other 2 were seen on the road at night. One was
so keen to stay where it was that I had to get out and make it fly off
the road.
Fortunately for the two I saw alive we were travelling slowly
looking for reptiles, so they had a chance, but I'm sure a lot get
killed on the road. I didn't know if they were using the road for
feeding etc, or if they were just crossing the road (one sealed, one
unsealed).
I can only assume that these bird would be hard to see during the day,
maybe seeing them on the road at night is they easier way to find > them.
