Hi birders and sports fans,
Just to give everyone some feed back for the last race of the Spring
Carnival - the 2005 Victorian Twitchathon. The results for the event are
below. Note that these are just provisional race result - they still
need to be confirmed with the nominated judges. I'll write a separate
report for the Seven Year Twitchers.
24-hour Event
* Seven-Year Twitchers 192
* Twitchity Grubs 171
* Common Loudmouths 161
* Ninox Ninkompoops 154
8-hour Event
* Norwegian Blues 126
* Latham's Snipes 103 (What a great team name!!!)
* Cheep Trills (who limited their run to metropolitan Melbourne) 76
Interestingly the (provisional) best bird for 2005 Twitchathon was a
nesting pair of Painted Honeyeaters, closely followed by Square-tailed
Kite - exactly the same two species that rated highly in the 2004
Twitchathon.
Some of the other birding highlights for the event included a Black
Honeyeater at Goschen (actually seen outside the official race time),
Gull-billed Tern at Lake Boga, Spotted Nightjar in the Whipstick,
Whimbrel and Common Sandpiper at Breamlea, Eastern Curlew at Barwon
Heads, large numbers of Cape-barren Geese at Werribee, Black-chinned
Honeyeater at the You Yangs, Budgerigar at Chiltern, Spotted Quail
Thrush at the Brisbane Ranges, and a Great Crested Grebe in suburban
Melbourne.
We also had newspaper journalist Lorna Edwards from The Age join us for
this years Twitchathon. In her article entitled 'Twitchers come out in
force for a weekend on the cheap', she quotes Jack Krohn who stated that
in order to win the Twitchathon participants need to be "opinionated,
aggressive, passionate, single-minded and distrustful." This year's race
finished with a very pleasant barbeque in the You Yangs.

I also did a range of radio interviews including VEGA FM with Tony
Squires, Rebecca Wilson and Steve (The Sandman) Abbott, who is a keen
birder. Did anyone manage to hear this? They quizzed me on a series of
birdcalls, which I answered correctly.
