I don't want to support the banders-are-worse-than-Hitler stuff but H5N1 is expanding its geographic range rapidly so it quite possible it'll reach Australian wild birds - whether it infects people in Australia is a very different question. Fortunately H5N1 currently is not spreading readily bird -> human and human <-> human transmission apparently isn't occurring. But personally I'd be cautious about handling sick or dead birds, particularly waterbirds, and extremely cautious if there are multiple sick/dead birds. And anything that looks like a disease outbreak should definitely be reported to the appropriate government department.
