Saw this behaviour today and, although it isn't earth-shattering, it's very cute. Two Black Ducks were swimming and feeding on algae in a narrow stream of water at the bottom of a drainage channel in suburban Canberra. Their method of feeding was to approach the edege of the 1m wide stream and paddle with their feet, scraping off the alga growing on those surfaces; they would then submerge the head and, presumably, catch the loosened filaments in their beak. -- John Leonard Canberra Australia www.jleonard.net |
