Dear Friends,
I am in Sao Paulo, having just finished a fantastic 24 days birding with Lelis
Navarrete of Neblina Forest in Bolivia, and 13 days with the wonderful Edson
Edrigo in Southeast Brazil.
In Beni, we had good views of 5 pairs of Blue-throated Macaw, probably
involving 6 individuals. To sum up, we saw all Bolivian endemics except
five-two (Zimmer`s Tapaculo and Unicolored Thrush) were out of our range. One
ultra-rare bird (Yungas Antwren) we never saw. With the last two, we were
defeated by circumstances- many punctures on the appalling road to see the
Inquisivi Spinetail (most Bolivian roads are awful!) so we never got there.
And on our last day birding the mountain on which we should have found
Berlepsch`s Canastero was entirely swathed in dense cloud.
In Southeast Brazil, I was just filling gaps after two previous trips. In the
last forty-eight hours, I saw, well, at distances from 15 to 20 feet,
Grey-winged Cotinga, Long-trained Nightjar, Bearded Tachuri, Ocellated Crake,
and Great Snipe (photos from a distance of 3 feet!). The whole trip was like
that. Edson is a magician!
Anyone who would like trip reports, including coordinates for many rare species
and advice on how and where to see them, let me know.
Cheers,
John
