It all depends on what you consider "lots" of spam.

Personally, I am subscribed to a couple of birding mailing lists and quite a few IT-related ones, and birding-aus is the only list through which I receive spam. Maybe I'm lucky, but still the fact remains that the birding-aus mailing list is being/has been harvested by spammers.

Probably the only solution now is for individuals to filter it out as it arrives, but it's still worth checking out whether there is anything else that can be done.
