The local Magpie-lark pair arrived in June, 2003, in juvenile plumage. He
had no left foot - just a stump - and a badly deformed right foot; she had
a deformed left foot. They started breeding in December of that year, but
only ever raised Koels! (At least 3 over two seasons.) Life was very
difficult for that poor disabled male, and he died on Saturday, only into
his third year.

Since 6:30 this morning, Tuesday, there is great celebratory dueting on my
TV antenna, and Mrs Magpie-lark has already found a new male..... this time
with two good feet!

How sad that such a valiant, faithful, hard-working mate was only mourned
for two days.

I mourn still.

Robyn
