Hi Birders,
With the winds having changed around to the south yesterday morning and
there being some sun in the afternoon, my son Drew and myself decided to
check the seabirds at Soldiers Pt and Norah Head, on the NSW Central Coast
between 1500-1600 hrs. Conditions were cold and windy, too windy for the
telescope, so we did change after half an hour from Soldiers Pt, to nearby
Norah Head, spending another half hour at the latter place.
A big sea was running from the south and the commonest seabirds were
Fluttering Shearwaters, estimated 1000+, in big feeding flocks. Hovering
around these flocks were a number of Australasian Gannets, Silver Gulls,
Crested Terns and some White-fronted Terns. There were a number of Albatross
present, those that came close enough to be identified being 3+ Black-browed
Albatross, 1 Yellow-nosed Albatross and the best bird, an adult Wandering
Albatross, with hardly any black on the upper wings, resting on the water
close in to Norah Head.
