Like Sean, I also visited Williamstown today but mainly around the
town centre adjacent to Gem(?) Wharf. One particular bird caught
my eye - a juvenile Silver Gull which remained somewhat aloof from
the group, even when tempted with leftover chips from The Town Fryer.
At first glance it appeared to have the two horseshoe bands on the
head, but on closer inspection they were extensions of the brown,
smudgy cap; there was not an ear patch/spot. It had extensive
brown mottling on the wings, but the underwing looks much the same
as the other gulls present (none quite as young, but some immature
birds.)
The other highlight was seeing two Peregrine Falcons, probably a
pair, at Newport Powerstation on the ferry ride to Williamstown.
It wouldn't surprise me if they are breeding there.
