After Sundays pelagic from Port Fairy I was too tired from the extra
sea-sickness medication I took to drive home so headed for the Great Ocean
road stopping at a coastal wetland near Tower hill on the way (access from
Gormons road).Striated Fieldwrens in the area and a nice mixed wader flock
on the beach (30 Red-capped Plover, 20 Double-banded Plover, 3 Hooded
Plover, 5 Curlew Sandpiper and 5 Red-necked Stints!).No Neophemas but didn't
walk all the way around.
After a good nights sleep, dawn at Loch Ard gorge had a number of Rufous
Bristlebirds being very vocal and I managed great views of one on a path
before the tourists began arriving. Offshore a number of Shy Albatross were
wheeling around.
At The Gable lookout in Otway NP near Lower Gellibrand did a short seawatch.
More Shy Albatross, 1 Giant-Petrel sp. and a Peregrine at close range.Rufous
Bristlebird in the scrub too.
And a final highlight whilst heading north back home was a look at Lake
Martin near Cressy where amongst the 100's of Black Swans were 2 Cape Barren
Geese and 2 Brolgas.
Re. the pelagic trip...... my guess is that at least some people's interest
in the tern present, was subdued by the sea-sickness pills which I'm sure we
had all woofed down!!!
Cheers,
Simon Starr.
