Hi all, although conditions weren't the best I
decided to check out North Head this afternoon. To my surprise I think saw both
species of Giant-Petrel (not certain though). One was wholely dark, with a
uniform "palish" coloured bill, perhaps a juvenile Southern, but the other I'm
pretty certain was an adult or near adult Northern feeding off a dead fish. The
face, particularly around the base of the bill was speckled white. I guess the
tell-tail feature though was its bill which was pale, with a darkish tip,
perhaps even a hint of redish (this could clearly be seen - the Southern I
think has pretty much uniform colouration in all plumages?). The remainder of the body and wings were dark brown. The calm
conditions made picking up both of these birds sitting on the water
easy.
Not much else present except for a number of
Australasian Gannets and a single Black-Browed Albatross.
Cheers
Simon.
