Thanks to you all for the generous replies to my question. One of the things I like about birding people is their humility, and so I assume that first. I had put the query out in as naive a form as I could make it -- open to all answers is what the question was. In the face of this issue, I do feel I'm a beginner! Anyway, sadly I guess, Ockam's Razor does hold true -- the odds of seeing an uncommon bird are always going to be uncommon. Well, now I feel somewhat clearer about this issue, and certainly have a clearer picture of its many faces, and what I might do. So -- thank you.

Regards,
Judith.
