For those who did not see yesterday's IT Alive supplement in The Australian newspaper there was a snippet on the front page regarding a new piece of birding technology. The Song Sleuth by Wildlife Acoustics, a hand held gadget, is pointed at bird noise and responds with a bird name. Appears to be confined to the US but I am sure will spread to other regions.
 
Apart from the obvious, may be an important tool in the future to identify significant areas without necessarily having to physically identify the species.
