Sightings
22 May
Highlights of the Eastern Treatment Plant survey this month include 3
Freckled Duck, 2 Wedge-tailed Eagle--this is the first record for the plant
and area--25 Red-necked Avocet, 5 Double-banded Plover and 1 White-winged

21 May
At Wombelano Falls (Kinglake National Park) there was a male Rose Robin, a
Lewin's Honeyeater and 4 Red-browed Treecreeper. Thanks Michael Ramsey.
21 May
Along Oaklands Road at Oaklands Junction (5km north of Melbourne Airport)
there was a Black Falcon. Thanks Michael Ramsey.
21 May
On Loemans Road Bulla there were approximately 1250 Little Corella and a
male Peregrine Falcon, that killed and ate a Feral Pigeon. Thanks Michael
Ramsey.
20 May
While bird surveying Pyramid Creek (just south of Cohuna) revegetation
areas, there was three juvenile Elegant Parrots. Thanks Chris Coleborn.
19 May
In Duck Arm, three White-bellied Sea Eagles, Two adults, one juvenile, one
of the adults was carrying a large stick towards the nest. At the Crescent
Island rookery, Pelicans are displaying red bill pouches and mating
behaviour, and on sand spits, Black Swans are sitting on nests. Thanks

18 May
Working on a small farm near Echuca (about 1km along the Echuca-Serpentine
Road from the Murray Valley Hwy) yesterday, found a lone Letter-winged Kite
being harrassed by a pair of Black-shouldered Kites. It repeatedly went to
roost in the foliage near the top of a large River Red Gum, and was
repeatedly mobbed into flight again by its relatives. Eventually they left
it alone for a while and it stayed concealed in the canopy of the RRG until
after I moved on. Thanks Lawrie Conole.
17 May
There were 8 Gang-gang Cockatoos in a schoolyard in East Ringwood, NE of
Melbourne. They’ve been there at least 3 days in a row. Thanks Karen

16 May
Interesting sightings made around Bruthen during an EGBOC outing included a
pair of Scarlet Robins and a small party of Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos.
At Monkey Creek in State Forest dominated by Stringybarks 1 male Rose Robin
together with small groups of Golden Whistlers and White-throated
Treecreepers were observed actively feeding. Thanks Len Axen.
15 May
During an outing organised by Goulburn Murray Branch of BOCA at least 150
Red-kneed Dotterel were seen on a wetland along Bendigo-Pyramid Road about
7km south of Pyrmaid Hill town. Other birds on the wetland included Grey
Teal (lots), Pink-eared Duck, Black-winged Stilt (5) and Australian

15 May
Highlights of a Port Fairy Pelagic trip for BOCA include the good numbers of
prions attracted to the krill offshore, close approaches by an adult Sooty
Albatross and a Soft-plumaged Petrel beyond the shelf and reasonable views
of a Southern Royal Albatross. Thanks Rohan Clarke.
15 May
There were 2 Australian King-parrot at Reef Hills Park. Thanks Michael
Ramsey.
14 May
At the Buxton Gum Reserve, Maroondah Highway, Buxton, an Olive Whistler was
seen. Just past the first boardwalk on the River track. Also Golden
Whistler, Crested Shrike-Tit, Gippsland race Yellow-tufted Honeyeater and
Eastern Whipbird. Thanks Richard Case.
14 May
A pair of adult White-bellied Sea-Eagles were soaring high over the Avon
River at Bushy Park. Thanks Duncan Fraser.

At the Killawarra Forest (Camp Picnic Area), there was a Black Falcon, 3
Red-capped Robin, 4 Speckled Warbler, 3 Flame Robin and two pairs of Hooded
Robin. Thanks Michael Ramsey.

At Boweya Forest, 9 late Little Friarbird, a Painted Button-quail, 5 Dusky
Woodswallow, a Rufous Songlark, 5 Noisy Friarbird, a Hooded Robin and 5
Blue-faced Honeyeater. Thanks Michael Ramsey.

A survey for King Quail on French Island uncovered 7 Quail. Other notable
sightings for the day were Juvenile White-bellied Sea-Eagle at Linleys Swamp
on the northern end of the Coast Rd. 18 Blue-winged Parrots (no
Orange-bellied!) in the dry salt marsh about 1km north of Tankerton (no OBPs
seen recently on the island). Thanks Martin O'Brien.
12 May
Interesting waterbirds seen during a Edithvale Wetlands Survey included
single Australasian Bittern and Cattle Egret, while small numbers of waders
were present, including a Marsh Sandpiper (unusual for May). A Pied
Cormorant was only the fourth record at the wetland on the monthly survey,
while a Little Eagle was the fifth record all but one being on the May

12 May
A flock of about 25 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos flew over La Trobe
University, Bundoora, at 10:30am this morning. Heading south-west towards
the city. Thanks Dean Ingwersen.
11 May
A white morph Grey Goshawk was seen feeding on a Tawny Frogmouth at Camp
Eureka near Yarra Junction. Thanks John Miller.

There was a Peregrine Falcon on a powerline corner of Derby & New Streets,
Kew eating a starling for at least 40 minutes. Thanks Vivienne Zethoven.
11 May
A single Nankeen Night-heron feeding on the grass field of Johnstone Park,
in front Geelong Town Hall and Arts Gallery (Geelong CBD). Thanks Alex
Farias.
10 May
Large rafts of Australasian Gannets have been observed off the ocean beach
at French's Narrows, while small numbers of Double-banded Plovers are
present on the sand flats at the mouth of the Snowy River. Thanks Len Axen.
9 May
An adult Powerful Owl was observed in an Alder tree clutching a half-eaten
possum in Gipps St, East Melbourne. It was later seen perched in an English
Elm on the median strip of Powlett St, snoozing, at 5pm. Thanks Shane Browne
& Steve Davidson.
9 May
A huge flock of Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos (approximately 150 birds) flew
noisily over my house in Park Orchards in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Noel Gross reported large numbers ( dozens!!) of Little Wattlebirds near
Cockatoo ( they are quite uncommon here in the hills) and a Wonga Pigeon (
very uncommon ) at her home at Symons Road, Avonsleigh. Thanks Graham Beal

The highlights of the monthly Port Fairy Pelagic include: 1 Slender-billed
Prion, 2 Antarctic Prions, 10 Sooty Albatross, a Common Diving-Petrel, a
White-fronted Tern and a White-chinned Petrel. Thanks Mike Carter.

Further, a single Bush Stone-curlew, four Speckled Warblers, a juvenile
Turquoise Parrot and a group of Diamond Firetails were seen at the Warby
Ranges State Park. Thanks Aaron Organ.

Five Swift Parrots were seen approx. 200 metres north of the Readymix site,
along Lancashire Road (east side of the Hume Fwy), Chiltern - Mt Pilot
National Park. Other species of note include Turquoise Parrots at Bartley
Block, Hooded Robins at Donchi Hill, and Painted Button-quails along
