Hi Michael,
Permethrin is an artificial pyrethrum formulated in WW2 to
treat lice in soldiers.
It is currently used to treat head-lice in children, has
been extensively tested and is very safe for humans, very occassionally it
causes a transient skin rash. Stings mucous membranes and eyes. NOT
carcinogenic in humans although some internet ratbags claim it to be.
Ingesting a couple of Kg. might give you a gut-ache though!
We wash our clothes in it then dry them out. Insects drop dead
when they touch the clothes. I lasts several washes/rinses, is VERY
effective. Washing mosquito-nets in some African countries has reduced the
death rate from malaria in children by one third.
We get it from "The Travel Doctor", a syndicated group of
GPs with travel medicine expertise, who do inoculations and the like.They
sell sachets of permethrin with instructions. Should come up on Explorer.
Used to be available in Queensland supermarkets, may still be.
