As further evidence of their potential to be a major pest, they were introduced to Florida, USA in the late 1970's and are now well established right across the southern states to Texas, and are now being sighted in California. They deserve a place at the top of our species not wanted list.

Hi Michael,

If you read further down Martin’s message you will see they are referring to Streptopelia decaocto which was the one we used to refer to as the ‘Eastern Collared Dove’ when I lived in England.

This species had never been seen in the UK prior to the 1950s, by 1964 there were 3000 pairs, by 1972 between 30,000-40,000 pairs. They have now exploded as far as the Faroes and Iceland. It has been reported a pair may breed up to 6 times per year.

Personal opinion is that is not really one of the species we really require in Australia, we have enough Spotted Turtledoves around here already, and these are a very similar species.
