Hi all,
North east Victoria never eases to amaze me! A weekend of birding started
at Chiltern - Mt Pilot National Park where a small flock of approximately 5
Swift Parrots were seen about 200 metres north of the Readymix site, along
Lancashire Road (east side of the Hume Fwy). Large numbers of honeyeaters
at Cyanide Dam, including Black-chinned, White-plumed, Brown-headed,
Yellow-tufted, Fuscous, Red Wattlebird and surprisingly no Friarbirds.
Other species of note in the Park were Turquoise Parrots at Bartley Block,
Hooded Robins at Donchi Hill, and Painted Button Quails along Greenhill Dam
Road. No Regent Honeyeaters observed, and little in the way of lorikeet and
honeyeater activity throughout the park, which is most likely a result of
very few trees currently in flower. I was also pleased to locate a
population of Bibron's or Brown Toadlets Pseudophryne bibroni, which is to
my knowledge the first record for the park!
Anyone interested in spending a weekend up there should look at the Park

On the Sunday l visited the Warby Ranges State Park (approximately 5
kilometres north-east of Wangaratta, Victoria) where l observed two female
Hooded Robins, a group of 10 White-browed Babblers, a single Bush
Stone-curlew, Crested Shrike-tit, and a small number of honeyeaters.
However, similar to Chiltern few trees are currently in flower.
l was also fortunate enough to see a group of 4 Speckled Warblers carrying
on with large numbers of Yellow Thornbills and Brown-headed Honeyeaters, and
managed to spot a juvenile Turquoise Parrot, a group of Diamond Firetails
and Jacky Winters.

Overall a great weekend, which should only get better for honeyeaters over
the coming months when many of the White Box, Mugga Gums and Grey Box come
into flower.
