Dear all
Viusited Quipolly dams Saturday morning - not far north of Quirindi,
south of Tamworth, NSW. Owing to the drought which is so bad west of
the Divide, Quipolly old and new dams were full of water and water
birds. The old dam had Freckled, Blue-billed, Black and Pink-eared
ducks, Hardheads, Grey Teal, Shovelers, Hoary-headed Grebes but no
Australasian, and a few Little Pied Cormorants and 2 White-faced Heron,
several Black-fronted Dotterel, Moorhens and Purple Swamphens. Woodland
birds in the surroundings included Striped, Yellow-tufted, White-plumed,
Spiny-cheeked and White-eared honeyeaters, one Whistling Kite and a
Wedgie overhead, Double-bar and Red-browed Finches, Variegated and
Superb Fairywrens, Brown Tree-creeper. Back down the road in a few old
box trees heavy with blossom were Blue-faced HEs and lots of Musk Lorikeets.
At the new dam were huge numbers of Hoary-headed Grebes and scattered
over the whole water quite a few Gt Crested Grebe. Didn't have a scope
with me but did add Musk Duck to the duck list.
Returning home this morning from Murrurundi on the Scone/Barrington Tops
road, near Belltrees many grey box trees were also in heavy blossom and
the cacophony of calls from Noisy Friarbirds, Musk and Little Lorikeets
was wonderful. No Regent Honeyeaters seen or heard. Did find a small
family of Grey-crowned Babblers, being pestered by the local Noisy
Miners who were no doubt glad to have an easier species to annoy as they
were making no impression on the N.Friarbirds, being totally outnumbered.
