Striated and Yellow Thornbills

Hi Steve, everyone else,

 

It depends on where you're looking, I suppose.  Down in Sth Gippsland, where I've done most of my watching, Yellow Thornbills are few and far between, and we had a couple of local sites only where we would find them.  Striated Thornbills I saw most days.

 

In Melbourne, it depends on what reserve/park I'm visiting; for instance I often get Yellow Thornbills in Darebin Parklands, but Striateds at Chelsworth Park.  In past visits to inland and northern Victoria, Yellow Thornbills, while uncommon, have been regular finds.

 

I tend to (but not backed up by any hard data) associate Striated Thornbills with wetter, or riparian canopy, and Yellow Thornbills with more open or dry woodland canopy.
