Many local ,interstate, and international birders have looked for Grass Owl and Ground Parrot in the Cooloola NP, at the site described in Thomas & Thomas (head south down the Cooloola Way from Gympie-Rainbow Beach road, after approx. 5km turn left onto dirt track with overhead powerlines). Visited there last week to find sign which bars access to ALL vehicular traffic, except for "authorized entry". Sign erected by Qld Govt DEH and NPWS. Didn't manage to call into office at Rainbow Beach to find out more.
Sign itself doesn't bar access and there is (so far) no gate. Sign didn't prevent two utes hooning down track as I walked it, neither bearing any "authorized " insignia. So you can still get to the birding spots, but you now need to pack your hiking boots along with binos, spotlight, tapes, player and anyother equipment one feels inclined to carry.
The correct title of the park is the Coolooa Section of the Great Sandy NP.
