Hi Mick,

nice pictures! I had no idea that Mittagong was SUCH a productive area. Or maybe you're talking in more sweeping terms... I'm sure I recognise some of your Mittagong shots from Kanangra, say, or the Kowmung River.

Still, you have photos I will probably never get a chance to see.

Take care,

Hello all,

I've just put up Part 1 of my New Caledonia photo series on my website Wildlifing (www.wildlifing.com). They are from a trip in November 2003. Part 1 covers from Mont Koghi through Parc Provincial de la Riviere Bleue to Chute de la Madeleine. New Caledonia has a tremendous plant diversity. It was once joined to NZ and Australia as part of Gondwanaland. However its retained more of its ancient flora than NZ and Aus.

Its avifauna is interesting because it has many similarities with Australia with many niches filled by by the same genera as in Australia. Not to mention oddities like the Kagu. Wow, what a bird! One of my absolute wildlife watching highlights. Parc Provincial de la Riviere Bleue was a highlight although difficult to visit at the moment with there being no vehicle access across the bridge at Pont Perignon. I understand that this hasn't changed in the last couple of years. I would have liked to spend more time there.

Some of the birds include Kagu (a page), Crow Honeyeater, New Caledonian Crow, New Caledonian Whistler, New Caledonian Myzomela, Barred Honeyeater, Dark Brown Honeyeater, Streaked Fantail and Yellow-bellied Robin.

Chute de la Madeleine was an amazing place, not rich in bird life, but the scenery was very strange and other-worldly.

There are three more parts to come which I'll put up in the next few weeks.

Please enjoy,

Mick
